We cover the most frequently asked questions about mascara.

Where does mascara come from?
Mascara is a product used to darken, lengthen, and add volume to eyelashes. It's a product that dates back quite a long time. In ancient Egypt, black charcoal was used as a base to darken eyelashes. It was a sign of youth and beauty. Around 1900, a better formula was developed: charcoal mixed with petroleum jelly. Not the best combination, of course. Fortunately, in 1960, a formula was introduced that was safe for our eyes. The brush was improved, and there you have it: the mascara as we know it today. So, the mascara we know hasn't been around for that long.

What types of mascara are there?
Mascara provides dark lashes, adding volume or length. But there are endless variations, so there's something for everyone. Most mascaras are black, but you can also find brown, green, or even purple mascaras. Whatever you prefer.

Most mascaras are water-based, which means they can be easily removed with makeup remover. But this also means that the mascara can run when you go swimming or accidentally get caught in the rain. (Read tips for makeup in the rain here!) That's why there are also waterproof mascaras that can withstand that.

How long is mascara good for?
Mascara is a product that can spoil quickly. Because the brush touches your lashes, it picks up a bit of dirt each time. Think of eyeshadow dust that has landed on your lashes, for example. Then you put the brush back in the tube, which causes more dirt to accumulate inside. Most mascaras are only good for about 6 months. Check what is stated on the packaging, as you don't want spoiled mascara. This can cause irritation or even an eye infection. You can recognize spoiled mascara by a musty smell, a gray/dull sheen, and more clumps. Unsure if your mascara is still good? When in doubt: throw it out!

How do you apply mascara?
There are a few steps you can follow for the best effect.

  1. Use an eyelash curler before you start with your mascara. This lifts your lashes, making them appear even longer.
  2. To achieve the best effect, start at the base of your lashes. Make sure you have a mascara brush that allows you to easily reach your lash base.
  3. Then apply the mascara in a zigzag motion or by blinking. Both techniques work well; it just depends on what you find most comfortable and how your lashes look best.
  4. Got mascara on your eyelids or around your eyes? No problem. Wait until everything has dried. Then you can easily wipe away the spots with a cotton swab and some water/makeup remover.
