Determining Your Undertone

The first step is to find your own undertone. It's very important to know this when choosing a foundation. Skin tones have three different undertones: cool, warm, or neutral.

Cool Undertone (pink or rosy)

  • Veins appear purple or blue
  • Skin burns quickly in the sun
  • Your skin doesn’t really tan

Do you recognize this? Then it’s very likely that you have a cool undertone. With less melanin in the skin, your skin has a soft, sometimes peachy or porcelain appearance. With a cool undertone, neutral and light shades with a rosy undertone will highlight your radiant, natural beauty. Avoid overly yellow or dark shades that can give your beautiful complexion an uncomfortable, orange hue.

 Warm Undertones (olive to yellow)

  • Veins appear green and yellowish
  • Skin doesn’t burn quickly in the sun
  • Your skin tans easily

Do you recognize this? Then it’s very likely that you have a warm undertone. This means you have higher levels of melanin in your skin, making it easy for you to tan in the sun. Avoid dark copper tones, as these can make the skin appear orange.

Neutral Undertone (none of the above)

  • Skin doesn’t burn quickly
  • Skin doesn’t tan quickly
  • Veins have an intermediate color

Do you recognize this? Then you have a neutral undertone.

Foundation

Now that you know your undertone, you can start testing foundation shades. It’s important that the color is neither too light nor too dark. The best place to test foundation is on your jawline, and see if the color matches both your facial skin and the color of your neck. Why? This way, you can see which color suits your neck, décolletage, and face. The foundation should blend beautifully with your skin tone. Skin tone changes with each season, so make sure to adjust your foundation to match your skin color.

We hope you will now find the perfect foundation shade.
