You probably use them every day, but you might forget how important it is to clean them properly; your makeup brushes. If you wear makeup often, it's essential to clean your brushes regularly. But why is this so important, how do you best clean your makeup brushes, and how often? We’ll tell you all about it here.
Why clean brushes?
Your face always has dirt like skin flakes, bacteria, and oil. Your makeup brush comes into contact with this every time and accumulates more and more between the bristles. Old makeup residues also cling to it. Not exactly fresh and hygienic to use that brush every time. Additionally, with a clean brush, you can apply your makeup much better and distribute it evenly across your face. That's why it's very important to clean your makeup brushes regularly.
How do you best clean your makeup brushes?
There are several ways to clean your brushes:
Special brush cleanser
Makeup brands often offer special brush cleansers. This is meant for a quick clean. Brush cleansers usually come in spray bottles. You spray the cleanser on your brushes and then wipe them well on a cotton pad or tissue. Keep doing this until no more makeup residues come off. This can also be done the other way around.
(Baby)shampoo and water
But you can also use (baby)shampoo and water, which is a very popular method. Use a bowl with lukewarm(!) water and add a bit of (baby)shampoo. Swirl your brush well through this water and rinse the brush out with water. You'll see the water in the bowl change color; if you have many brushes, change the water in between. Then let them dry well.
Olive oil/dish soap
Cleaning your brushes with olive oil and dish soap nourishes the bristles at the same time. Just be careful not to use too much oil, or your brushes will become greasy, making it harder to apply your makeup. Put the olive oil and dish soap on a plate and mix it. Swirl your brushes through it a few times and then rinse them well with water. After that, let the brushes dry well on a towel.
Tips for cleaning
- Make sure to only wet the bristles of your brushes, not the wood or metal.
- Let the brushes dry lying down on a towel or tissue. Do not let them dry upright!
- Don’t press too hard with your brushes while cleaning. This is bad for the bristles, which can cause them to fray. Therefore, make sweeping motions.
How often should you clean your makeup brushes?
How often you clean your makeup brushes is up to you. It also depends on how often you use makeup. The more often you use the brush, the more often you naturally need to clean it. Is this daily? Then it's smart to clean your brushes once a week.
