Applying eyeshadow has many different techniques. Are you going for a light, subtle look for the day or a bold evening look? No matter which look you choose, the basics of applying eyeshadow remain the same. But how do you apply eyeshadow best? And how do you make it last?

Step by step eyeshadow application
The most important step in applying eyeshadow is using an eyeshadow primer. By using an eyeshadow primer, you prepare your eyelids for the application of eyeshadow. The eyeshadow blends more easily, won’t crease, and the colors appear more vibrant.

After applying an eyeshadow primer, it’s smart to apply a so-called ‘transition shade’. In other words: a base color that makes the final eyeshadow pop. It’s best to use a taupe or light brown color. Apply this all over your moving eyelid.

Now you’re ready to create your eye look:

  • Apply a light eyeshadow with a stiff flat brush to the inner corners of your eyes. Also, add a light stroke just below your eyebrow.
  • Next, take a color that is one shade darker than the lightest. Use your flat brush to pat this color all over your eyelid, from your lash line to the crease. Don’t go much higher or further than your outer corner.
  • Contour your eyelid with your darkest shade. Use a round brush for your darkest eyeshadow to give your eyelid some contour. Start at the outer corner of your eye and sweep the brush in a half-moon motion upwards and around the center of your eye. Make the eyeshadow darkest along your lash line and let it fade upwards.
  • Use your clean round brush to blend the eyeshadow along the edges so they transition nicely into your skin tone and also along your eyelid so the three colors mix. Make soft, sweeping brush strokes to blend the eyeshadow well.
